I believe in open, direct communication with the people I serve. That’s why my office makes it a priority to keep residents informed and accessible in every way possible. We publish a comprehensive quarterly newsletter, maintain a monthly column in the Kansas City Call newspaper, and I regularly write op-eds in outlets like The Kansas City Star to speak directly on issues impacting our community. I also take advantage of meaningful press opportunities and use social media to provide real-time updates and engagement. My team and I pride ourselves on being responsive. From sending New Year’s cards to staying active and visible in the district, I make sure you know what’s happening and how to reach me. Even down to little things like simplifying my email address— mph@kcmo.org —that's it. When I was running for office, I always said I wanted to be known as the councilwoman who got stuff done. For me, that starts with showing up—and following through. When a constituent reached out for help with a $16,000 water bill tied to a deceased family member’s home, I worked quickly to intervene. Within days, I helped reduce the bill to just $400. It’s not just about policy—it’s about people. Whether it’s a multimillion-dollar housing initiative or one neighbor facing an overwhelming challenge, I treat every issue with urgency and care.

Since before taking office, starting in 2022, I’ve been hosting an annual Christmas Eve Luncheon, bringing people together to share a hot meal and celebrate the holiday season. This event is open to everyone—especially those who might not have a home or family to spend the holidays with. It’s not just about the food, though. It’s about creating a sense of community. I serve the meal alongside volunteers, and we also offer Christmas caroling, winter care packages with clothing and hygiene products, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. This luncheon is my way of ensuring that everyone has a place to feel loved and cared for during the holidays. It’s one of my favorite traditions, and I’m honored to continue it each year.

When a senior in our community reached out and reminded me how few activities are available for older adults in Kansas City, I knew they were right—and we decided to do something about it. That’s how the Senior’s Valentine’s Day Bash was born. We celebrated the holiday with over 60 seniors, enjoying line dancing, games, a photo booth, great food, and plenty of fun. It was a joyful event that reminded me how important it is to create spaces for every generation to feel seen and celebrated. I’m excited to make this an annual tradition. When someone identifies a gap in our community that I can help fill, I see it as my responsibility—and my privilege—to act.

Each year, I host the annual Christmas Toy Drive, "Santa’s Toy Shop," to spread holiday cheer to families in the 3rd District. This event serves hundreds of Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) Head Start and elementary school families, giving parents the chance to pick out toys for their children, all made possible by the generosity of our community. The toy drive is a highlight of the holiday season, and it’s more than just about the toys. It’s about showing families that they are supported and valued. This event is a chance to bring joy and make the holidays brighter for those who need it most. Through the power of community collaboration, I’m proud to ensure that the holiday season is a little bit brighter for local families.

Each year, I’m proud to host the Pawliday Giveaway, an event has served hundreds of pets across the 3rd District and entire City. This initiative recognizes that our pets deserve to celebrate the holidays too, and it’s a chance to give back to families in need. Through the Pawliday Giveaway, families receive essential pet supplies, ensuring that their pets have everything they need to stay healthy and happy during the holiday season. From food and toys to grooming supplies, this event is all about supporting both pets and the people who love them.
