Youth Advocacy

Growing up on the east side of Kansas City, I have always understood the risks and opportunities our youth face. Because of my experience, I understand that it takes more than programs and campaigns to change the lives of the youth in Kansas City. Our youth are one of the most vulnerable populations in the city, and our decisions, and the way we make them, should reflect this.

What I’ve done so far:

I’ve worked with youth on violence prevention messaging and campaigns, outreach efforts, and COVID-19 vaccine adoption plans. Throughout this work, I ensured that young people were involved in every step and had the power to shape the projects themselves.

Since taking office, I’ve followed through on my commitment to expand youth representation. I immediately began building the Kansas City Futures Office, which houses both the Kansas City Youth Commission and the Kansas City Young Adult Commission. These commissions, made up of members ages 13 to 24, advise the City Council on issues affecting youth and young adults, and lead the City's outreach and engagement efforts for their peers.

I believe that lasting change requires investing in our youth’s long-term success. That’s why I’ve partnered with KCPS to create workforce development programs designed to help students launch stable careers right after high school graduation.

What I’ll do next:

Looking ahead, I will continue to center youth voices in everything I do. With several initiatives focused on youth and families on the horizon, we must create safe, engaging spaces for young people — spaces for recreation, entertainment, and personal and professional growth.

I’ll work to expand strong programs like KCFutureBuilders that prepare youth for long-term success while giving them the opportunity to take part in the city’s progress. And I’ll continue collaborating with young leaders to improve quality of life for all Kansas Citians.
